Product Review
"In the June '94 issue of Acoustic Musician, Dan Crary devoted his
column to ways of prolonging the life of your strings. PROTEK Products
of Port Jefferson, New York, has a new product called StringLife. It
is an environmentally safe flouropolymer (from flourine, a halogen
gas) which bonds with the outer surface of your strings, creating a
barrier which resists the corrosiveness of acid perspiration and
humidity. StringLife is a liquid which comes in a 2-oz. bottle with a
dauber applicator. Simply apply it to the strings, wait a few minutes,
then buff off the excess with a soft cloth.
I'm one of those players who can readily put something like this to
the 'acid test.' One set of phosphor bronze light-gauge strings lasted
me 16 days in the July '95 heat wave in the Northeast, including a
two-hour outdoor gig, a one-hour indoor gig, and daily rehearsals.
Before, that same set would have been shot after the outdoor gig.
StringLife has worked on all alloys, gauges, and brands which I
tested. It won't make a set last indefinitely, but I do think that,
with StringLife, you won't need to change strings as often. What I
like most was the way that the tone stayed alive."
